Department of Child Support Services (DCSS)

Picture of money for child supportThe California Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) is a state agency that assists in establishing, modifying, and enforcing child support orders.  Child Support Services can also determine paternity as part of a child support case.

DCSS is further organized within each county, where there is a Local Child Support Agency (LCSA) assigned to handle matters. A list of each LCSA can be found on the DCSS website at http://www.childsup.ca.gov/home/lcsaoffices.aspx.

A majority of cases involving DCSS are those in which one or both parents are receiving public assistance, but any parent may request the assistance of DCSS regardless.  When a parent is receiving cash aid, the case must be heard by a Child Support Commissioner.

Dealing with DCSS can often be difficult and overwhelming.  It is important to remember that a DCSS attorney represents the County, not the parents.  If you have an active child support case with DCSS, you should consult with a local attorney experienced with the LCSA in your County to ensure your orders are accurate and being enforced correctly.
